Ray Tate, 94, of Homer died at Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Mr. Tate ws born Feb. 9, 1903, at Kell, the son of Elmer and Rusha Myers Tate. He married Priscilla Hiser in 1928. She preceded in 1936. He married Julia Umbanhowar, Dec. 24, 1938. She preceded in September 1995. Survivors include a son, Dopn Tate of Homer; two daughters, Elizabeth Rothermel of Homer and Barbara Downs of Broadlands; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred Tate of Fisher and a sister, Ann Mooney of Kankakee. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Mr. Tate was a member of the United Methodist Church of Homer. He was a 50-year member of the Homer Lions Club and the Champaign County Farm Bureau. He also was a member of the Champaign-Urbana Elks and the Order of the Moose. He farmed in the Homer area for many eyars and was the first fertilizer dealer in the area. He was a dealer for Crow’s Seed Corn and Buhner Fertilizer Co. and later worked for Agrico Chemical Co. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on April 10 at Kirby Funeral Home, Homer. Rev. J.L. Penfold officiated. Burial was held in the GAR Cemetery. Homer. (transcribed by Homer Historical Society)
