Robert Lee Arnold, Sr. was born February 6, 1905 in Greenville County. He departed his life on Saturday, December 5, 1987 at St. Francis Hospital, following a two week period of confinement to the hospital, but a long period of declining health.

Robert was the son of Mary D. Cobb and together she and her husband, James "Jim" Arnold reared him up until her untimely death when Robert was nine years old. Later, he was reared in the home of his grandmother, Sarah Moore Cobb, and his aunt, Nellie Cobb. He attended school at the Old Chapman Grove School. As a young man, he attended Shady Grove and New Pleasant Grove Baptist Churches. However, he connected himself with New Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

In the early 1930s, he was ordained a deacon at New Pleasant Grove by the pastor, Reverend J.C. Cowans, Sr. He served as a member of the Senior Choir during the 1950s and the early 1960s. In 1956, he was elected Superintendent of the Sunday School and served for twenty-six years, resigning in 1982. In 1962, he was elected Treasurer of the church and served until 1977, a period of 15 years. He served on the Church Planning Committee from the late 1960s until 1982, when his health began to fail. He served as Treasurer for the Enoree River Congress of Christian Education, 1967 to 1970, with Rev. N. J. Brockman as President.

Robert was first married to Miss Beatrice Yeargin. To that union was born six children, Eliza Mildred, Sarah Lee, Hazel Edith, Rozella, Curtis, and Robert Lee, Jr. Preceding him in death were his wife, Beatrice and two children, Curtis and Rozella.

In 1962, he was joined in matrimony to Mrs. Florence Sullivan Sullivan. To this union two sons were born, Kenneth Leon and Warren Clayton.

Survivors of his immediate family are a devoted wife, Mrs. Florence S. Arnold; three daughters, Ms. Eliza Mildred Arnold and Mrs. Sarah L. Epps of Greenville, South Carolina and Mrs. Hazel Edith Rearden of Columbia, South Carolina; three sons, Robert Lee Arnold, Jr. of Brooklyn, New York, Kenneth Leon Arnold and Warren Clayton Arnold of the home; one sister, Mrs. Nora Downs of Suitland, Maryland; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four nieces, one nephew; many other relatives and friends.
