William H. Harlowe and Anna Shue, later of Mount Vernon, MO. John's 1917 draft
registration says he was a ship painter in Newport News. (He registered in his
home town of Mount Vernon, MO.) John played the trombone, sometimes in clubs in
Washington, DC. In the 1930s, he created a "day job" by beginning a typography
firm in Washington, D.C. He married Elva Dorsey a longtime Montgomery County,
Maryland resident. In 1920 John is a lodger in Elva's mother's home in DC
(Fannie Dorsey) and in 1930 John and Elva are in DC and say they have been
married 10 years. (Still in DC, each age 41, they say age at marriage was 31.)
They may have been married in Rockville, Maryland (per a nephew). John and his
wife had no children, so he asked nephews from Mount Vernon, MO if they would be
interested in working with him. One came and did not like Washington, and
returned to MO. Next came Clarence E. Harlowe (son of John's brother Carl), who
brought his wife (Marguerite Orr) east and stayed. John retired and was living
on the Rhode River, near Mayo Beach,Maryland. His house caught fire and he died.
Among things that were in the garage, and thus not burned, were Missouri land
records for his grandparents, Jacob and Anna Shue.
