Bessie Mae Lewis Elliott was born in Smithville, Clay Co, Missouri, the youngest child of Annie Alice Gaut Lewis and John Jackson Lewis. The family moved to Kansas when Bessie was a young child, first to Logan Co, Kansas and then to Cloud County and Republic County. On 2 June 1929, Bessie married Mervin Allen Elliott in Scandia, Republic Co, Kansas. They were the parents of three children, Charles Roy Elliott, Martha June Elliott Sherman Shanks, and Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth Elliott George.
