While in Augusta, Joe Woodson enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a lieutenant in France during World War I. After his discharge, Joe married Miss Edna Fischell Bernd on November 20th 1918. Edna was a native of Saint Louis, Missouri. One son was born to this union: Joseph Bernd Woodson in 1922.
Joe took a job with the Chevrolet Motor Company, as Credit Manager in Saint Louis, Missouri. After a few years in St. Louis, Joe moved his family to Brunswick, Georgia and sold real estate. Here Joe and Edna adopted a son: David Woodson Hadley.
In 1935, Joseph Woodson accepted a position at the United States Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. He rose to be the Chief of Bookkeeping and warrants.
In 1975, Joseph retired from the Treasury Department and moved to Orlando, Florida; where he live until his death on July 5th 1965 at the age of 76 years. He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
