Hymnist. A professor of literature (Un­i­ver­si­ty at Lew­isb­urg, later re­named Buck­nell Un­i­ver­si­ty), Baptist minister, and composer of nearly 500 Gospel hymns. He al­so worked as a mu­sical editor at the Big­low Pub­lish­ing Com­pany. His most memorable works included "Shall We Gather at the River," and the beloved Easter hymn "Low in the Grave He Lay."
