Services Friday for Charles R. Benson

Charles R. Benson, 77, retired coal miner and farmer, died Wednesday evening at his home, 418 Second Ave. East.Born in Sweden Oct. 5, 1871, Mr. Benson came to Monroe county at the age of 17.

Survivors are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Earl Whicker, Davenport; Leslie of Moline, ILL., Vaughn of Milan, ILL. and Otto of Detroit, Mich. Seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services with Dr. D.C. Young officiating will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical United Brethren church. Burial will be in Oak View Cemetery. The body is at Lewis Funeral Home.

Charles R. Benson was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1871, and died at his home in Albia, Dec. 22, 1948, at the age of 77 years.

He came to America when he was 17 years of age and settled in Monroe county, and for sixty years lived within a nine-mile radius of Albia.

He married Artha Ann Raner in 1895. To this union eight children were born. Two sons died in infancy.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Earl Whicker of Davenport; and five sons, Ray and Jay Benson, both of Davenport, Leslie and Vaughn Benson, both of Moline, Ill., and Otto Benson, Detroit, Mich. Seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

Mr.Benson was baptized in the Lutheran faith when a child in Sweden. Funeral services were held at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Albia Dec. 24, with Dr. C.L. Young in charge, and burial was in Oak View Cemetery.
