Captain Bill Griffith was born at Meadow Fork on Big Briar Creek in what was then Western Virginia. He was Captain of the first Coal River Stern-wheeler named the Peytona. He was the first to take a stern-wheeler up the coal through the new locks and dams (1855) Captain Bill worked the Coal until the Civil War started and he served in the Confederate Army.

The first working inland waterway in the United States was built on the Coal River in 1855. Cannel Coal was the primary cargo along with basic necessities required by people living in the isolated regions of what is now Boone and Lincoln Counties.

Captain Bill Griffith is buried on a steep hillside in what is now named Brounland in Boone County .

Captain Bill was the son of Benjamin William Griffith and ?. and the husband of Cathrine Hill their Children were, Allen 1826-1900, John 1827-1869, Andrew 1823-1901, Austin 1835-?, Caroline Griffith (Price) 1836-1810, Cornelius Griffith 1834-? William 1832-1891

He was located living with his Son Allen Griffith in 1880 Census he was 74.
