Ideara O. Watkins Resident of Richmond, CA Ideara O. Watkins passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at her residence. Per her request, there will be no public viewing. A Graveside service will be held on Monday, March 18, 2013, at 12pm, at Sunset View Cemetery, 101 Colusa Ave., El Cerrito, CA. A repception will be Held following the service at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1203 Willow St., Oakland, CA.
Published in Contra Costa Times on March 16, 2013Ideara Odell Watkins was born in Monroe, Louisiana on November 8, 1924 to Jessie Toliver and Loretta Gordon. She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.

Ideara attended school in Monroe and graduated from Monroe Colored High School in 1943.

After graduation she moved to San Francisco, California where she worked for the federal government as a welder during World War ll, and later as a streetcar (trolley) operator for the San Francisco Municipal railway. She eventually returned to employment with the federal government, working for over 30 years as a Clerk Ty7pist at naval facilities located at Mare Island, Treasure Island, Hunters Point, and Naval Supply Center.

Ideara was a faithful member of the historic Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church for more than 65 years uniting under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. William Clark. She provided extraordinary service as the Church Clerk for many years. She also served as a member of the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) for more than fifty years, and at the time of her passing she was the Vice President under the leadership of sister Mary Walton, WMU President. She enjoyed reading and studying the Bible and faithfully participated in the Sunday School Ministry. During her early years she loved to work with the youth within the Church family.

She was also a faithful working Officer in the St. John Missionary Baptist District Association in which the Reverend Dr. Ray W. Williams is the Moderator. She was a staunch supporter of the H.A. Green Memorial Scholarship awarding financial assistance to youth of the St. John Missionary Baptist District Association to further their educational pursuits. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Baptist Women's Housing, Inc, which provides housing to Women in transition. She participated in the Angel Tree Christmas program, which delivered gifts to the children of prison inmates. Finally, she participated in the California Missionary Baptist State Convention and the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America for over 60 years with great distinction and dedication.

In addition to her activities in the church,she previously served as a member of the Oakland Toastmistress Club and the National Council of Negro Women.

On October 8, 1966, Ideara and Rufus Watkins Jr. united in holy matrimony.
Their union brought together a blended family of three children, Ideara's son Bobby Shelling Sr,; and Rufus' two sons, Charles Watkins and Reverend Dr. Donald Watkins.

Ideara will be remembered for her love of family and friends, always providing words of encouragement to all who know her. She enjoyed traveling, public speaking, gardening, and entertaining family and friends at her home.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Rufus Watkins Jr,; son Bobby Shelling Sr.; parents Jessie Toliver and Loretta Gordon; brother Hotson Toliver; and stepson Reverend Dr. Donald Watkins
