Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when he enlisted in the Confederate Army and was commissioned Captain of Company K, 23rd North Carolina Infantry. Promoted Colonel in April, 1862, he led the 23rd North Carolina in the Peninsula Campaign and was wounded at Seven Pines. After being wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, he was promoted Brigadier General in September, 1863. He led a division in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Shenandoah Valley Campaign and served on detached duty attempting to catch deserters in the fall of 1864. Following the war he resumed legal practice in North Carolina and eventually became a banker in Alabama.
