At the outbreak of the Civil War, Alford enlisted in the Confederate Army and was mustered into Company C of the 10th Texas Cavalry. Little information about Alford's service in the War is known. However, the 10th Texas Cavalry was organized in the fall of 1861, and was dismounted in April 1862. They participated in numerous engagements in Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Some of the engagements were, Jackson, Chickamauga, Kennesaw Mountain, Franklin, and Nashville.
On November 15, 1865, Alford married Mary Ann "Mollie" Williams in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas.
