Mary "Polly" (Back) Combs was actually born February 6, 1823 and died January 26, 1914. Polly was the daughter of Joseph and Permelia (Hogg) Back and was born in Perry (now Breathitt) County, Kentucky.

She married Richard Combs, the son of Matthew and Frances (Brown) Combs. After Richard died, Polly came to Oklahoma to live with her daughter, Dicie, who had married Thomas Patrick. Polly's husband Richard and most of their children are buried at the Higgins Cemetery, in Morgan County, Kentucky.

I, Paul Downing, came from Michigan to Oklahoma in 2001 and after a terrible time finding the cemetery, I found Polly's headstone face up beside its base and sunk in the ground about six inches. By myself, without any tools and in 95 degree heat, I struggled for about two hours, using nothing but my hands and a dead branch for a pry bar, getting the stone out of the ground and back on its base. (Note hole on left side of picture) By the time I walked back to my car which was parked about three miles away, I did not have one dry thread on my body.

Polly was a sister to my great grandfather, Stephen "Steve" Back.

Many children are buried at this old cemetery that has suffered a lot of vandalism over the years. The former village of Bethel was once nearby. This area is on high ground and the Pryor Creek flows below the bluffs just several yards away.
