Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted on August 18, 1861 and commissioned a Captain of Company B, 37th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. For his actions against Confederate forces on the Kanawha River, West Virginia he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel on October 12, 1861. In assaults at Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi, he was wounded but remained with the 37th through campaigns in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. On November 13, 1864, he was promoted Colonel in command of the 37th and destroyed the tracks of the Columbia & Charleston Railroad during the campaign of the Carolinas under General Sherman. For merit and devotion to duty, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865 and mustered out on August 12, 1865. After the war he was the representative for the Lenk Wine Company, Ohio until his death at age 58.
