Awards: Purple Heart. He was aboard the U.S.S. Indianapolis during WWII when it was torpedoed by a Japeneese submarine in the Philippine sea, after delivering parts for the atomic bomb to Tinian Island. His body was never recovered. He was adopted by his godfather Anton & Justina Burkhartsmeier after the death of his father, then going by the name Anton T. Burkhartsmeier. On 20 December 2018, in Washington DC, the crew of the U.S.S. Indianapolis was collectively awarded a Congressional Gold Medal of Honor.
