World War II Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, United States Army General. A combat veteran of World Wars I and II, he was the highest ranking United States military officer to become a prisoner of war during World War II and he received the Medal of Honor for his gallant service at Corregidor, in the Philippines, before surrendering to the overwhelming Japanese forces.
