Johnny Wayne Ball, 78, Wayside Farm Road, Parkersburg, passed away at his home on March 12, 2013.
He was born Nov. 18, 1934, in Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of the late Harold and Katie V. Yocum Ball.
He attended Parkersburg High School and then joined the United States Air Force in 1951 where he was stationed at Rantoul, Ill., for his basic training. On Aug. 9, 1952 he eloped with his high school sweetheart, Jo Ann King. Johnny was then shipped to Merced, Calif., and was there for three years. While in California, their daughter Cheryl was born (Dec. 13, 1953). He was discharged Nov. 1955 and returned to Parkersburg, where they have since lived.
Upon returning to Parkersburg, Johnny worked at Electromat in Ohio and also worked at several different body shops in Parkersburg. In 1970, he became self-employed owning his own body shop off Route 47. In 1989, he moved his body shop to Wayside Farm Road beside his home. He did body work on City Police cruisers for 17 years. Johnny and Jo were also owners of the Elranchero Restaurant in Parkersburg and also prepared Wednesday night meals at North Parkersburg Baptist Church.
Johnny was a member of Calvary Memorial Church and served as custodian for 23 years. He was very active in his church and Jo and Johnny made costumes for the dramas. When something needed to be fixed, they called Johnny. He loved his church family and they loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jo. Johnny and Jo were happily married for over 60 years and they believe the key to their marriage was togetherness and serving the Lord. He is also survived by his daughter, Cheryl Dean; his son, David Ball (Crystal) of Parkersburg; two sisters-in-law, Jan Adams (Paul) and Norma Mason; seven grandchildren, Gregory Dean, Douglas Ball, Jeremy Ball, Jennifer Ball, Jessica Ball, Dawson Ball and Dakotah Ball; eight great-grandchildren, Becca, Dean, Leanna, Nora, Damien, Tricia Ball, Haleigh, Sophia Mercedes; several nieces and nephews; a very dear friend, Gene VanMeter; and his little poodle, Mingi.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Lewis; brothers-in-law, Gerald Mason and James Lewis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 15 at Calvary Memorial Church, 607 Wayside Farms Road, Parkersburg with Pastor Rob Collins and Rev. Norman Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen North Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post #15. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today at the church.
The family would like to thank Dr. Siva Sivamurthy Kyathari, Hospice and Camden Clark Medical Center for the love and care they gave Johnny.
