Leslie Jean Heckman passed away on March 11, 2013 at Bronson Nursing/Rehab Center in Lawton, Michigan after an extended battle with MS.
She was born March 29, 1952 in Dowagiac, Michigan to Robert and Annajune (Bucher) Abshagen.
Leslie grew up in Decatur, Michigan and graduated from Decatur High School in 1970. She sang in the Methodist Church Choir and liked sewing in the 4H. She attended Olivet College. After moving to South Bend she was employed at Allied Products Corp, a liaison company with the three car makers. While working there, she met Dennis Heckman. They married on October 4, 1986 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in South Bend.
Leslie, with her mom and her nephew, were involved with clowning and entertaining in nursing homes, hospitals, schools and birthday parties. After her experience with clowning , she realized how gracious the elderly are, and she wanted to get involved in geriatrics and went back to school at Indiana University in South Bend. A short time later she was diagnosed with MS and was unable to continue with her plans.
Surviving are Leslie's husband, Dennis of Granger; her mother, Annajune Abshagen of Decatur , brother, Bruce (Janet) Abshagen of Decatur and exchange student brother Achim (Barbara) Lange of Germany. Also surviving are two nephews, Brett (Anita) Abshagen and Todd (Casey) Abshagen; two grand-nieces Shayla and SueAnn; and one grand-nephew Gabriel; as well as Dennis's sister and her family.
Leslie was preceded in death by her father, Robert Abshagen in July of 2011.
Services for Leslie will be 1:00 p.m. Friday , March 15, 2013 at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, IN, where friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. until time of services on Friday.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN.
