J A BLAKEMORE RITES AT LIBERAL

Liberal, Kan., Nov. 9 - Funeral services for James A. Blakemore, 59, co-founder of the Blakemore Bros. Grocery Co. supermarket chain, were held at 2:30 p.m. today at the First Christian Church, with the Rev. Willard Roberts, former pastor, officiating.

Mr. Blakemore, who was recognized nationally as one of the foremost developers of the modern supermarket, died Sunday at his home here. He was born in Prairie Grove, Ark., and moved to Liberal in 1919 to work for his brother Tom in the J. E. George Grocery Co.
In 1920, the brothers purchased the store from George and a year later were joined in the business by another brother, Shelby.

In 1929 the firm was incorporated as the Blakemore Bros. Grocery Co. and started an expansion program responsible for 23 modern Ideal Food supermarkets in southwest Kansas, Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. The firm has been operated as the Ideal Division of ACF Wrigley, Inc., a nationwide grocery chain, since Sept. 12, 1960.

Blakemore was also a director of the first National Bank in Liberal, the Garden National Bank in Garden City and the Haskell County State Bank in Sublette at the time of his death. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Liberal and was active in civic work.

Survivors include his wife, Ola; a son, James A. Jr. a student at Ft. Hays State College; two daughters, Mrs. Jane Seitelson and Mrs. Joyce Armbruster of Liberal; four brothers, T. J. Blakemore and Jake of Liberal, Shelby of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Olin of Enid, Okla.; two sisters, Mrs. A. B. Hammon of Plainview, Tex., and Mrs. Joe Pittman of Liberal; and five grandchildren.

Burial was in Liberal Cemetery under the direction of Miller Mortuary.
