Corp Michael S. Conrad

Michael S. Conrad, 81, died Saturday, March 9, 2013. Service: 11:30 a.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery with a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at Thompson's Harveson and Cole Funeral Home. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Michael was born June 12, 1931, in Poland. He was a boy when he was taken from Poland in a cattle car to Germany and their work camps. For several years, he worked hard and received little food. He and his family lived through bombings and fires, standing in water waist deep to keep from being burned. U.S. Marines shot the locks off the gates and fed them after the German guards left them to starve. He and his family moved to the United States and worked on a farm in Missouri to pay back their passage here. Michael worked hard on the farm, picking cotton and doing chores. As soon as he was old enough, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and loved every minute of it. The GI Bill enabled him to obtain a chemical engineering degree. Later he earned a master's degree in business administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, N.J. He married Barbara Anita Bean and they were blessed with three daughters. He was a good Catholic who was thankful for his freedom and his family. Survivors: His wife, Barbara; daughters, Elaine A. Solomon, Michelle Hyland and Angela Schlemeyer; and grandchildren, A.J. Solomon, Sarah Hyland, Brooke and Kristen Schlemeyer.
