"A Special Brother"
LOGAN, Utah -David Charles Hatch, 70, died February 18, 2000 at Sunshine Terrace of emphysema.
He was born to Joseph Eastman and Florence Nibley Hatch in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 5, 1930. David grew up in Salt Lake City, attended public schools there, and graduated as an A student from East High School in 1948. In the summer of 1948, David fell victim to the insidious disease schizophrenia, and was unable to enroll at the University of Utah as he had planned. His life after that was filled frustratingly with years of treatment by many doctors from coast-to-coast, with little success. Unfortunately, at the time we became aware of his illness, the medical treatments, so successful today, were not available. David has lived with his disease with a quiet dignity for 52 years.
David's childhood with his family was a happy one. He grew up in the Yale Ave. and 15th East area of Salt Lake City, and he had many good friends. He enjoyed the Boy Scouts and studied piano with Frederic Dixon. He was good at Latin, mathematics, and about everything else. He spent several wonderful summers at the family cabin on the Weber River, riding his pony, Apollo, fishing for trout and playing with his cousins, Teddy and Nancy.
For the past sixteen years David has had the compassionate caring of wonderful doctors and the excellent nurses and staff at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. David was very musical, and he has greatly benefited from the music therapy program. He has practiced Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata under Melou Stewart-Cline and Annette Ricks and received much joy singing in choruses and as a soloist. With Melou's wonderful work, David's life was turned around. There is no doubt great joy came to him through her patient and skillful work. Bonnie Smith, Janene Farley, and other music therapists were also extremely helpful.
David is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Eastman and Anne Hatch, Logan; nephews, Joseph E. (Sandra) Hatch, Salt Lake City; Richard C. (Rosemary) Hatch, Humble, TX; and niece, Annie (Joel Zimmerer) Hatch, Salt Lake City. David enjoyed visits from his grand nephews and niece, Robert Eastman Hatch, William Rae Hatch, Catherine Elizabeth Hatch, Jonathan David Hatch, and Lorenzo David Hatch Zimmerer.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael J. Stones, Dr. Merrill C. Daines, Dr. Curtis R. Canning, and the wonderful staff at Sunshine Terrace for the compassionate care David has received during the past sixteen years. We are very grateful to the many nurses who have cared for David, especially Margaret Staley, one of his early nurses, and Kristie Johnson, his last nurse.
We especially thank Bill Marshall, David's special friend, for his many years of friendship and devotion to David.
