Along with his wife, Lucille Acker, Werner founded Goerke's Country Tavern in 1971. He built it on his farm on Weil Rd. between Marion and Cibolo. It became a favorite eating place for locals and people from surrounding counties. He was a World War II Veteran and was very active in the VFW. His German roots were very important to him and he belonged to several German singing clubs. He married Lucille Acker, daughter of Edmund Philip Acker and Clara Vogel, on May 20, 1948. They had six children: Susan Ann Goerke Fritz, Frederic Goerke, Janice Marie Goerke Garza, Barbara Jean Goerke Eoff, Sharon Kaye Goerke Garza, LuAnn Goerke Archibeque.
