A memorial service for B. Connor Johnson, 90, of Oklahoma City will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City on Sunday April 28. Dr. Johnson died at Oklahoma City, Wednesday, April 3, 2002. He was born at Regina, Saskatchewan, 28 April 1911 to the late Wilfred Connor Johnson of the 9nth Concession of Malahide and Edna Young of Port Bruce. His father was an early photographer in Regina then proprietor of Hopkins Studio in St. Thomas in the early 1920s and settled in Hamilton, Ontario where Dr. Johnson completed his early education. Connor spent many summers as a youth at his grandparents' home in Port Bruce and later in life frequently visited friends and relatives at Port Bruce.
Dr. Johnson was an active Distinguished Career Scientist at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and was recently named one of the Outstanding Alumni of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, from which he earned a Master's degree. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin in an era when that institution was considered the world center of biochemistry. While a Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana, he received international acclaim for his work on the molecular mechanisms of vitamins in health, disease and aging. He was brought to Oklahoma in 1965 to head both the OU Medical School's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Professor Emeritus in 1981) and OMRF's Biochemistry Section. He was recruited for President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace Mission to South America. A Guggenheim Fellow to the University of Reading, England, and a National Science Foundation Senior Fellow to the University of Paris, Gif-sur Yvette, he served as visiting professor at universities all over the world, including the University of Uppsala, Sweden, and the University of Strasbourg, France, and in recent years, as a Research Scientist at the University of South Florida All Children's Hospital.
