Melvin John Arens, age 80 of Crofton, Nebraska died on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance, Nebraska with the Rev. David Fulton officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Constance. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington, NE.
Pallbearers will be Ron Tramp, Gary Schumacher, John Van Heek, Derek Van Heek, Gerard Arens, and Dale Arens.
Melvin was born on January 18, 1933 in Crofton to Fred Peter and Anna Margaret (Jansen) Arens. He grew up on the farm near Crofton and lived there his entire life with his brother Fred. Melvin did a lot of work fixing farm machinery; he was a welder, a machinist and a woodworker. He was nicknamed "Doc" as he could fix anything. Melvin and Fred started M & F Woodworking in 1995. They made cabinets and reconstructed the three altars at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance back to their original design. He and Fred spent about 20 months working on the altar project at the church.
Melvin is survived by his brother Fred of Crofton, NE; sister JoAnn and husband Fred Janssen of Arvada, CO; niece Linda and husband Greg Dean of Arvada, CO; nieces Caroline and Kathy of California; and nephew Fred of California.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents Fred & Margaret Arens; and by a brother Alfred Arens.
