Ray G. Mahanay
Ray Glenn Mahanay was born on August 31, 1917, on his father's homestead in the Elmwood Community of Beaver County, to Adolphis Franklin and Carrie Elizebeth (Wilson) Mahanay. He was the sixth of six children (four boys and two girls). Ray attended the one room school of Garrett, where he walked the three miles to school checking his traps along the way until he was old enough to ride his horse, Pretty. Ray was greatly influenced by his eighth grade school teacher, Mrs. U. Mae Cook, not only in schooling but also in the area of music. Ray worked at a young age working feed for a neighbor, helped to build Highway 270 using horse teams, scrapers, plows and shovels. When he was 17, Ray and one of the neighbor boys went to New Mexico to look for work, not finding any, they "hopped a freight" to California. He worked at a lot of different jobs including breaking horses, and picking fruit, olives and nuts. He developed many skills he would use later. In 1936, Ray returned home and met the new Garrett school teacher, Edith Allene Willis. On April 16, 1938, Ray and Edith were married in Guymon at the Methodist Church. Ray and Edith helped his parents with harvest and agreed to take over the debts on the family farm so his parents could continue to live on their homestead. They built a small house and later added on to it twice. They raised two fine daughters, Bobbie and Ann, who started school at the same one room school Ray had attended and Edith had taught at. Ray and Edith were true partners for their 64 plus years together. They wired houses, business and new construction together when electricity became available. They also raised Hereford cattle. Ray died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Ochiltree General Hospital at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Edith; two daughters, Barbara (Bobbie) Jennings and husband, Kenneth of Magnolia, TX and Ann Mahanay of Amarillo, TX; one sister, Leola Eldert of Pekin, IL; four grandchildren, Bill and Brad Hopper and Donnie and Dennis Jennings, three great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
