Born Jose Eduardo ALVAREZ in Berlin, Usulután, El Salvador, Central America, on March 27, 1922 to Eduardo ALVAREZ and Maria RAMIREZ de Alvarez. As a young adult, Baldo (as he was affectionately known to his family and friends) felt the calling early in life, to service the Lord in the Roman Catholic Church.

By age 23, Baldo was ordained Priest of Congregation of the Mission, on November 4, 1945. Within two decades, on October 7, 1965, Baldo, now 43, was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador, El Salvador, and Titular Bishop of Tabunia.

On January 25, 1966 Baldo was ordained Bishop Titular Bishop of Tabunia. Two years later, on November 4, 1968, at age 46, he was appointed Bishop of El Salvador, Military and Security members. The following year, on December 9, 1969, Baldo was appointed Bishop of San Miguel, El Salvador.

On March 7, 1987, a few weeks before his 65th birthday, he resigned as Bishop of El Salvador, Military. A decade later, on April 10, 1997, Baldo, now 75, retired as Bishop of San Miguel, El Salvador.

After 3 years of declining health, Monsignior 'Baldo' Alvarez, now Bishop Emeritus of San Miguel, El Salvador, peacefully passed away on October 10, 2000. He was 78. He was survived by his sisters Aida (ALVAREZ) Bates of Daly City, California, U.S., and Amanda (ALVAREZ) Alvarayeros, of San Salvador, EL SALVADOR.
