LAKE CITY: Mr. Joseph Furman Boswell, Jr., 88, departed this life on May the 16th, 2013.

Mr. Boswell was born in Manning on December the 11th, 1924. He was a son of the late Joseph Furman Boswell, Sr. and the late Viva Ann Floyd Boswell; and was the widower of the late Tracie Davis Boswell.
Mr. Boswell grew up in Manning, and was educated in the schools of Clarendon County. He graduated from Manning High School in 1942, and went on to attend Coker College. Mr. Boswell was drafted into the military, and honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II.
He fought with the famed 9th Infantry Division under Major Manton Eddy in the 39th Regiment, Alpha Company. The 9th Infantry was known as "Old Reliable", and saw extensive combat action in the European Theater. Mr. Boswell earned three battle stars and the Purple Heart for his bravery and skill during the many campaigns fought across the Rhineland, North Africa, and Central Europe.
Mr. Boswell was the co-owner of Floyd Motor Company in Lake City, where he worked for the past sixty-six years. He was a long-time member of the Lake City United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities assisting and supporting the church since his joining in 1954. Mr. Boswell was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, and play golf, going often with his son, Jody. Mr. Boswell was an exceptional wingshooter, and shot ducks and doves well into his eighties.
Mr. Boswell's surviving family includes his two children, Joseph Furman Boswell, III (Martha), and Deborah Boswell Gardner (John); his five grandchildren, Sarah Boswell Holmes, Mary Grace Boswell Mungo, Muffy Merrit Fulmer, Ashley Andrews Tanner, and Al Andrews; and his six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Boswell is preceded in death by his brother, Dalton Floyd Boswell.
The family of Mr. Boswell will have calling hours from five until seven o'clock p.m., Sunday, May the 19th, in the funeral home.
Funeral services for Mr. Boswell will be conducted at eleven o'clock a.m., Monday, May the 20th, in the Lake City United Methodist Church, officiated by The Reverend Doctor Samuel E. Marcengill. Burial and committal services will be held immediately following the funeral in the Lake City Memorial Park.
