John Roach, Sr., was born on the banks of Cape Fear River, North Carolina. He was the son of an emigrant from the North of Ireland, who had settled in North Carolina in colonial times. John was both a farmer and brickmason. In about 1790, he left North Carolina with a wagon and pack horses and traveled through the wilderness to Tennessee. He was one of the earliest settlers of Davidson County. After a few years, he moved to Wilson County. He bought a tract of timberland and began a homestead. By the time of his death, he had improved a large farm. (Source: Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson, Jefferson, and Pottawatomie County, Kansas. Chicago, 1880. pp. 325)
