World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Surry, England, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1/5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, British Army. During actions at Helles Gallipoli, Turkey, December 23, 1915, 2nd Lieutenant Smith was throwing a grenade when it slipped fell to the bottom of the trench close to several men. He immediately shouted a warning to clear the trench, then saw that the men were unable to find cover. Knowing that the grenade was due to explode at any moment, he flung himself upon it and was instantly killed by the explosion. His magnificent act of self-sacrifice undoubtedly saved many lives. For most prestigious gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on March 3, 1916.
