A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Nancy Way Atkins and Linda S. Atkins, who survives and the son of Oscar Wiley Atkins and Cora Bell McAdams Atkins, both deceased. He was a member of the National Guard. He attended Aycock High School and graduated from Alamance Community College. Mr. Atkins was employed for 34 years with Kayser-Roth and attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include three daughters, Jo Ann Atkins Hensley of Mebane, Jeannie Atkins Parker and husband Jim of Mebane and June Atkins of Sharpsburg; two stepsons, Rusty King of Burlington and Jeff Squires of Mebane; four siblings, Remell Atkins Paris of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Billy J. Atkins and wife Bonnie of St. Petersburg, Fla., Carl C. Atkins and wife Judy of Prospect Hill and Carolyn Atkins Lloyd and husband Joe of Burlington; a mother-in-law, Thelma Scott of Graham; 10 grandchildren, Ronnie Hornaday Jr., Bobby T. Hornaday, Jay Parker, Olivia, Crystal, Jeffrey, Katherine, Jordan, Noah and Addison; six great-grandchildren, Christian, Heather, Carson, Jackson, Arizona and Drew; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Atkins of Burlington; numerous nieces and nephews; family friend, Nina Taylor; and his best friends (dogs), Gus and Susie.
The funeral service will be conducted at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Lee Roy Pittard. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
