Professional Athlete. He was a professional English soccer player and cricket player who played for various clubs, including one international match for England against Wales in 1897. He was a goalkeeper who was renowned for his great size and weight, reaching perhaps 24 stone (152 kg; 336 lb) at the end of his career. He joined professional soccer club Sheffield United Football Club between 1894 and 1904. He was an instrumental part of the sides' winning campaigns in the Football League First Division in 1898, the FA Cup (Football Association Challenge Cup) from 1899 to 1902, and the Sheriff of London's Charity Shield in 1898. He left Sheffield United to join the newly formed Chelsea Football Club, where he became captain of the team, winning the Football League Division Two in third place the same year. He left Chelsea Football Club to go to Bradford City, where he retired from professional soccer. During his soccer career, he played cricket for Derbyshire Cricket Club in the 1900 season. He passed away in Sheffield, England, in 1916. The cause of death was cirrhosis.
