Decatur, Dec. 16 - Mrs. Madeline Babcock Smith, 65, author of the recently published novel, "The Lemon Jelly Cake," died tonight in the Decatur & Macon County hospital. The book, released Aug. 4 in book form, also ran as a three part serial in a women's magazine. It was semi-biographical - an account of life in a small Illinois town.
The scenes were from Rochester, Il, where Mrs. Smith was born. She lived in Springfield from 1892 to 1918 when she moved to Decatur.
Surviving her are a son, state Sen. Elbert D. Smith of Decatur, Republican member from the 28th district, and two daughters, Mrs. James W. Moore, of Decatur, and Mrs. George Schroyer, of Evanston.
