William Sherman Fauhl [born Faull], was born on Nov. 24, 1865, in Randolph County, North Carolina to Edwin Faull and Diza Ann Thornburg. He arrived in New Ulm in November 1892 according to the 1895 Minnesota Census. It is believed that he changed the spelling of his last name to the more German spelling of Fauhl while in New Ulm. He married Bertha Simon, daughter of David Simon and Louise Meyer Simon, in New Ulm on February 4, 1893. He appears in the 1900 New Ulm Census listed with the occupation of carpenter and, according to advertisements in New Ulm newspapers, he had experience as a mill-wright. In 1910 he was granted a homestead (Patent No. 104884) for 156 acres in Alaska Township, Beltrami County, Minn. In 1921 he was elected treasurer of Alaska township and served the town in various other positions over the years while working his large farm. He died at age 75 in 1941 from stomach cancer. The farm he worked so hard and lovingly on has now returned to wilderness.
