He was born to James and Elizabeth (Batts) Cook.

Nathaniel was midshipman on the H.M.S. Thunderer. This ship foundered in the great West Indies hurricane of 1780. He was lost at sea in this storm on Oct. 16, 1780, as was most of the crew.

The inclusion of Nathaniel on this family Cook Memorial at St. Andrew is a cenotaph, honoring his service and memory. His body remains lost at sea.
