Sarah Francis Cotton, was born on July 22, 1932, in Dry Branch, Georgia to Laura L Hunnicutt and Willie Smith, both preceded her in death. She was the only child of this union, and was raised by her grandmother Sarah Frances Givens who also preceded her in death.
She accepted Christ at an early age at the Swift Creek Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. A. C. Anthony. She was very active in her service to the church, sometimes running the broadcast on Saturdays when the pastor was not available.
Her education consisted of attending Swift Creek Elementary School, Hudson High School( aka Ballard-Hudson High), Georgia Baptist College where she was a member of the Lincoln Honors Society. She attended Lewis Business College and graduated as the student who accomplished the most. She graduated from Wayne State University Labor School. She made herself available to continue studies by taking classes at Wayne County Community College, Wayne State in other business classes to improve her skills as a supervisor. She was a member of Toastmasters International where she served as the Charter President of The Innovators, Detroit Computing Center Chapter. She truly believed in the bible scripture 2Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved....., and continue to study for her religious background by attending classes with the Metropolitan District and the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education to improve her abilities in various ministries. She participated at Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church where she served in the following ministries, Angelic Choir, Senior Usher Board, Missionary Society, Sunday School (superintendent for more than 15 years), Sunday School teacher for several years, Scholarship Committee and President of the Mothers Board.
She worked hard through the years at: Domestic Linen and Supply, Watkins Quality Products, Northend Security Company, Detroit Board of Education and in 2004, retired proudly after 29 years and 8 months of service from the U.S. Dept of Treasury (IRS) Detroit Computing Center.
She met and married Walter S. Cotton who also preceded her in death. She was a proud mother that raised three children and one granddaughter and instilling in them, the importance of a college education. She was very adamant about raising her grandchildren and great grandchildren to be the best they can be. She instilled in each and every family member a sense of dignity and morality, ensuring that they knew or became very familiar with the Word of God. No matter who you were, if you came in contact with her she would usually respond with a compassionate hug, or offer a word of encouragement and sometimes send, a letter or make a phone call to see how you were doing. Her favorite scriptures were 2Timothy 2:15 Study to show myself approved........., and Philipians 4:13 I can do all things who through Christ who strengthens me.
When she arrived in Detroit in 1951, her mother brought her two the prince of peace missionary baptist church under the pastorate of Rev. A. Moore and later Rev. S. Speech, Rev. W.M. Murphy, Rev. James Flake and Rev. Robert V Echols. She loved her church family and kept in touch with them from day to day.
For years she was a member of the Detroit woes Meridianites Social Club, where she served as President, Local Secretary and Regional Secretary-Parliamentary. She was also a member of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc., and Fannie Wingo Chapter #22 east, Order of the Eastern Star.
On March 2, 2013, she stepped into eternity to be with the Lord. She leaves to Cherish her memory three children, Vinnie M. Hunnicutt (Westland, MI), Laura V Amos(Southfield, MI), Emmett Cotton(Westland, MI), seven grandchildren, Steven A. Jones (Troy, MI), Glenda M. Jones (Detroit, MI), Belinda A Cotton (Oak Forest, Il), Levil I. Iroha (Westland MI), Sarah J. Cotton(Westland, MI) and Katrina Y. Alexander (Inkster, MI), Sandra Stockstell(Waukegan,IL). 10 great grandchildren, jasmine, Jamal, Jessica (who preceded her in death), Jayvon and Jamriah Jones (Detroit, MI), Faith, Steven II, Hope, Stephan, Charity and Grace Jones (Waterford, MI), a special granddaughter, Chandra Jones, one sister-in-law, Odessa Law (Detroit, MI), one brother-in-law, Lucious Cotton(Delores)Southfield, MI, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was a lover of big hats, and wore them proudly.
