Brigadier General, USMC. Commissioned in the Marine Corps after graduation from VMI. Later attended Harvard Law, becoming legal officer for the Commandant of the 14th Naval District at Pearl Harbor. An intelligence officer with the 1st Marine Division during World War II, he developed much of the amphibious landing doctrines used in the Pacific Theater. A member of the task force that retook Kiska in the Aleutian Islands from the Japanese. Moved to the 5th Amphibious Corps and took part in the assault and seizure of Tarawa, Makin, Saipan, Tinian, Guam and the Marshall Islands. After the war, he served with the group that established the CIA. Founding member of the Army-Navy Country Club. Direct descendant of Chief Justice John Marshall.
