First active political role was in the 1864 Lincoln-McClellan campaign. Helped organize the Republican Party in Georgia in 1867, making speeches in Atlanta and Savannah while armed soldiers guarded him from a possible attack by white men.
He was an active speaker in both Grant campaigns and in 1873, President Grant appointed him United States District Judge of the Eastern District of New York and Presidents Hays and Garfield both continued him in that position.
Son of John Tenney, 1792-1869, and Sophia Wentworth Tenney, 1795-1863.
