Civil War: Company G, 7th California Infantry

James N. Barnes was the son of James M. Barnes. He appears in the 1850 US Census at the home of his father at Montgomery Township, Jennings County, Indiana. At some point he headed to California's gold fields and became a miner in El Dorado County. He enlisted as a private at Placerville October 17, 1864, and was mustered into Company G, 7th California Infantry October 29. Private Barnes was posted to the Presidio of San Francisco, where he remained until May 1865. He was then posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, where he died of disease February 25, 1866 (Orton, 785, 873). His grave is not marked.
