Roy served as a Seaman Apprentice, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Landover, Prince George's County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Navy in November of 1941, just prior to the war. He trained as a member of the U.S. Navy Armed Guard at Little Creek, Virginia. After completion of training, his gun crew was assigned to protect the merchant vessel SS West Ivis. It sailed from New York in January 1942.

Roy was declared "Missing In Action" when the SS West Ivis was trpedoed by the German submarine U-125 east of Cape Hatteras, all hands were lost and no remains recovered.

Roy was awarded the Purple Heart.

He also has a "Cenotaph" in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia which includes his photo and a photo of his headstone.
