STERLING - Chy Joseph Miller, 40, died March 7, 2013, at his residence, Sterling. He was born March 27, 1972, in Sterling, to Joe Pat and Sheila Gum Miller.

He graduated from Sterling High School in 1990, received his paramedic Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community College, and received a Bachelors Degree from Central Christian College, McPherson. He was currently pursing his Masters Degree in EMS Education. A lifelong resident of Sterling, he was the EMS program director and department chair for public safety at Hutchinson Community College, HCC EMS is one of the largest EMS education programs in the State of Kansas. Annually, Chy's department trains and educates nearly 1,000 individuals in both initial and continuing EMS education. Chy has served in this position since late 2005. Chy became involved in EMS in 1989, by attending EMT class while still in high school in his hometown. He then completed paramedic at Hutchinson Community College in 1992. After paramedic school Chy continued his involvement with Rice Co. EMS while also serving departments such as Arkansas City Fire/EMS, McPherson EMS, Pratt EMS, and Barton Co. Community College.

He belonged to the Rice County Ducks Unlimited Board Member, Silver Sponsor, served on the Region III EMS Council Board of Directors, BEMS Instructor Development Task Force, BEMS Educator Curriculum Review Workgroup, and chairs the KEMSA Educator's Society.

Survivors include: his mother, Shelia Miller, Eureka Springs, Ark.; son, Elijah; three daughters, Taylor Miller, Zoe Miller, and Lydia Miller, all of Sterling; sister, Loranne and Doug McNutt, Sterling; and a niece, Sophia McNutt, Sterling.

He was preceded in death by his father, Pat Miller.
