John farmed in Section 34 of Casey Township on land thought to have been previously owned by his grandfather Levi Mumford - an early 1838 pioneer in Casey Township.

John T. Mumford 77, died at 3 p.m. yesterday in his home near White Oak Church, southeast of Casey. Mr.Mumford suffered a stroke and lived only a short time. The deceased and Mrs. Mumford, who was the former Phoebe Beasley, have lived in the same house since they were married 58 years ago. The body was taken to the Markwell Funeral Home and where it will remain until funeral services are arranged. It is probable that final rites will be conducted sometime Sunday. Surviving besies the widow are three sons: Charles and Frank of Casey and Elmer of Littleton, Colorado: three daughters, Mrs. Grover Hartman of Casey, Mrs. Denzil Mitchell of Moriah, and Mrs. Clarence Funk of Farmersburg, Indiana.
