Death Wins In Long Struggle
The long drawn struggle of Mrs. T.F. Hustace with influenza, extending over nearly four weeks of alternate hopes and fears, terminated fatally last Friday morning. Fortunately her mother, Mrs. Wm. Muller, arrived from Kona in time to see her alive and to receive a glad smile of recognition just before her beloved daughter breathed her last. An Impressive funeral service was held in the Lihue Union Church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. W. Bayless and Rev. J. M. Lydgate, with suitable music and a wealth of beautiful flowers contributed by sympathetic friends. There was a large attendance in spite of a torrential downpour of rain. The body was taken to Honolulu by her mother. The children remain for a time in Lihue in the care of Mrs. Hustace senior. Alice Muller Hustace was an exceptionally gifted and brilliant woman, endowed with graces and accomplishments such as are not often found in an ordinary rural community. A slight strain of Hawaiian gave her those natural qualities of grace, dignity and responsiveness that are characteristically Hawaiian, while her foreign parentage gave her the vivacity, intelligence, initiative, and sense of responsibility that betoken the culture and refinement of generations of education and training. In addition to being socially attractive, she was an ideal mother, devoted to the welfare of her children, and remarkably successful with them. Her gifts and graces made her a valuable member of the community, more especially as she was always ready to use them in any way that she could, modestly, yet efficiently.
