Artist. Born Matthias Wolf in Mörz, Prussia, the son of Elizabeth and Anton Wolf, a successful farmer. As a youth, he was apprenticed to Gebrüder Becker, a lithographer, at Koblenz. After having met Eduard Rüppell, an ornithologist and explorer, he was introduced to the director of the natural history museum at Darmstadt. He then worked for the museum as a lithographer. He also worked with Rüppell for the illustrations in his work, 'The Birds of North-East Africa' (1845). In 1848, he moved to London where he found work in the British Museum. He also obtained commissions for animal studies from the Zoological Society of London, and illustrated Robert Gray's 'Genera of Birds' (1844), John Gould's 'Birds of Great Britain' (1862-1873), and 'The Birds of Asia' (1850-1883). His reputation grew upon his realism when illustrating birds and animals, he is credited with establishing wildlife art as a genre unto itself, and has been called 'the greatest of all animal painters.' He continued to render drawings for the Zoological Society, and completed a large number of illustrations for natural history and travel publications. He was also a success as a painter of wildlife. When Charles Darwin began a study of animal expressions, he invited Wolf to do some illustrations. A. H. Palmer wrote his biography, 'The Life of Joseph Wolf' in 1895. He died at age 78 in London.
