Massachusetts Governor. He served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1896 to 1900. He served in the Massachusetts State Legislature from 1882 to 1884, then was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1892. He succeeded to the governorship in 1896 upon the death of Governor Frederic Thomas Greenhalge. He would be reelected twice on his own. He enthusiastically supported the Spanish-American War, obtaining $500,000 from the legislature for military expenses and saw to it that Massachusetts troops were the first to serve on the battlefield.
