Malcolm "Mac" Kenneth McKay, Jr., age 83 of Jasper, Texas passed away March 5, 2013 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Mac was born October 31, 1929 in Prentiss, Mississippi to Malcolm K. and Lucille Polk McKay.

After graduating high school at the age 16, Mac attended Hinds County Junior College for a year before joining the Army Air Corp in 1946. It was while he was stationed at Mitchell Field on Long Island, New York that he met and fell in love with Betty J. Wheeler. They were married October 12, 1948.

Following 2 more years of armed service, Mac moved his bride to Starkville, Mississippi, where he attended Mississippi State College from 1950–1952. He then transferred to LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry.

Upon graduating in 1954, Mac was hired by Southwestern Timber Company, by the late Richard M. Townsend, to be a district forester in Newton. In 1959, Mac was transferred to the Jasper office of Southwestern. During his career, he had the opportunity to mentor and train many good men, who became friends. After 38 years of service he retired from Temple-Inland in 1992.

An avid outdoorsman, Mac loved to share his passion for hunting and fishing with family and friends. Many fond memories were made when he took his children and eventually his grandchildren to the deer camp each year. Whether hunting deer, squirrel or turkey, it mattered not, he loved to be in the woods.

Mac took an active role in his community. While in Newton, he taught the Senior High Sunday School Class in the First Methodist Church. He was also a volunteer fireman who was called to work with Law enforcement on search and rescue efforts. In Jasper, he and a group of peers chartered the local chapter of the Optimist Club in 1967. Mac served as the club's first president. Other community involvement included a very active participation in the Jasper Youth Baseball program for over 10 years, coaching many young men along the way.

Mac's greatest joy in life was his family. He especially enjoyed the grandchildren whether rocking them as babies, taking them for rides on the ATV's, teaching them how to hunt, or building a sand castle on a sunny beach in Florida.

Mac was preceded in death by Betty, his wife of 57 years, and grandson, Dylan McKay Roberts.

He is survived by daughters, Carol McKay of Jasper, Cathy Roberts and husband Richard of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, Joan Townsend and husband Colin, of Jasper and Juanita Woods and husband, Chris of Jasper and his son, Ken McKay and wife Elaine of Eagle, Indiana. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kenneth and Cameron McKay, Laura and Will Townsend, Nick, Kellie and Caleigh Woods, and Isabelle Roberts and great-grandchild, Travis Woods. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Millican, of Brandon, Mississippi and her husband W.S. "Bud" and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Stringer-Griffin Funeral Home on Saturday, March 16, 2013. Visitation will be 9am–10am prior to the service to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Lakes Area Hospice of Jasper, or charity of choice.
