"Jerome S. 'Jerry' Affron, a longtime resident of Newburgh, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at home, after a brief illness. He was 85.

He was born on September 28, 1919 in Kingston, N.Y., the son of Samuel and Edna Silverstein Affron.

Jerry graduated from Beacon High School as valedictorian with the class of 1936. He then went on to study at Cornell University and graduated in 1940 and Cornell Law School in 1942, Phi Beta Kappa. While in law school, he wrote for the Cornell Law Review.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for three and a half years.

In 1946, he founded Affron Fuel Oil, Inc. and expanded the business to include Affron Tank Terminals in 1954.

Jerry was an avid tennis player and golfer, twice winning the City of Newburgh Tennis title, and competed on the Cornell Tennis Team. His achievements in golf included winning the Otterkill Country Club championship 10 times and the Newburgh Country Club championship twice.

He served on the Board of Trustees of the St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital for 25 years, and served as President of St. Luke's Hospital from 1970-1972. He was also a member of the Mt. Saint Mary Board of Trustees and a board member of Cedar Hill Cemetery. He was a member of the Optimist Club of Newburgh, Newburgh Elks, Temple Beth Jacob and the Powelton Club. He was on the Board of Directors of the Newburgh Savings Bank and was a founding member of the Otterkill Country Club.

Jerry's commitment to the community was recognized in 1992 when he received the Man of the Year Award from the Hudson Valley Oil Heat Council. In 1994, he received the Tri-County American Award, sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League. He was honored by St. Luke's Hospital in 1995 for his dedication and support of the hospital and the community.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Affron; his daughter, Maybelle Rowntree and her husband Mark of Brookline, MA; his son Stephen Affron and his wife Wendy of Newburgh; his daughter Cynthia Affron of Hampden, MA; his stepsons Mark Leo and his wife Debra of Merrimack, NH, Todd Leo and his wife Monica of Merrimack, NH; his grandchildren, Amelia and Julian Rowntree, Joshua, Corey and Samuel Affron, Samantha and Isabelle Leo, and Cameron and Brianna Leo.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 at Temple Beth Jacob, 344 Gidney Ave., Newburgh with burial to follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jerry's name made be made to the St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital Foundation, 70 DuBois St., Newburgh, NY 12550.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home."
