TRENTON — Arlene C. Jordan, 87, died Feb. 26, 2013, at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev. She was born Arlene Ruth Cousins, March 8, 1925, in Portland, the daughter of Medbra Cousins and Gertrude (Beal) Cousins.

Arlene's parents operated the Triangle Tearoom and the Triangle Diner at the intersection of routes 1 and 3 in Ellsworth during the 1940s and 1950s. Arlene was a 1944 graduate of Ellsworth High School and a 1945 graduate of the Western Union Telegraph Operators School in Washington, N.J. During her 27 years working for Western Union as an operator and manager, Arlene worked in many offices up and down the East Coast from Presque Isle to Key West, Fla., including an assignment in the Pentagon and Senate office building, Washington, D.C., at the close of World War II. Arlene retired in 1983 as clerk of the Bar Harbor District Court, where she was also appointed a Justice of the Peace and Dedimus Justice. She worked a short time for the Maine Employment Security Commission, and as a substitute teacher in elementary schools in Hancock and Bar Harbor. Arlene was a volunteer at Mount Desert Island Hospital in the 1970s. She was a former member of Ellsworth Eastern Star and Ellsworth Rebekahs. An excellent ballroom dancer, Arlene enjoyed music and traveling, especially to her winter home in Palm Springs, Fla.

Arlene was predeceased by her husband, E. Robert Jordan, in 1989. They opened and ran the first Sears Roebuck store in the Ellsworth area in 1966. Arlene was also predeceased by her brother, Medbra, in 1990; and her brother, Paul, in 1987. Arlene is survived by her son, Peter H. Jordan, his wife, Elida; and a daughter, Alexandria, of Wadsworth, Nev.; her sister, Judy Cousins, of Southwest Harbor; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Contributions in Arlene's memory may be made to Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor.
