Wallace passed away on Friday, March 1st after suffering a heart attack. He was preceded in death by his wife M. Jean, and daughter Margaret, and great-grandchild Kendrick Knox
Wallace was born on May 29th, 1921, in Egeland, North Dakota to Angus Gillis and Helen Matilda Campbell. He was the youngest of 7 children. He grew up on a small farm with his brothers and sisters. He was active in sports and served as a state officer with Future Farmers of America. He joined the Navy's V-7 program and attended the University of North Dakota. After graduation he attended Officer Candidate School at Notre Dame. He attended several naval Training schools and eventually served in the Pacific during World War II. After WW II he returned to North Dakota where he married Margaret Jean Cordingley on October 4th, 1947. Wallace managed a grain elevator in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota until he was recalled into the Navy during the Korean War. After Korea, Wallace was transferred to Treasure Island, where he served until he left the navy in 1957. He sailed for Chevron from 1957 until 1977, and then sailed from the Merchant Marines Union Hall until he retired in 1987. After retirement he was active with SIRS, American Legion, Masons, Moraga Seniors, Bowling, and Bocce Ball.
He is survived by his Children (Carol, Lyle, Fay, Ronald, James, and Helene), and 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing on Sunday March 10th from 2-6 pm at Oakmont Memorial Park Mortuary, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette. A celebration of life will be held on March 11th at 11:00 am at Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church, 10 Moraga Valley Lane, Moraga. Graveside services will follow immediately at Memory Gardens, 2011 Arnold Industrial Way, Concord. A reception will follow the graveside service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
