AUGUST SPRINGSTUBE Believes Health Bad, Takes Life Depressed by what he believed were symptoms of failing health, 79 year old resident of the Branch area shot and killed himself in the yard of his farm home Wednesday afternoon. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, termed the death of August Springstube, Route 5, Manitowoc, a suicide. Sheriff Clarence Baryenbruch said Springstube had used a 32 caliber rifle, pulling the trigger with a stove poker equipped with a hook. The shot pene- trated the heart, the coroner said. The suicide was discovered by a passing school teacher, who saw the body in the yard. Accompanied by the dead man’s wife, he ascertained Springstube was dead and summoned authorities. Dr. Teitgen said the suicide had apparently occurred about 4:30 p.m. at the home just south of Branch. Springstube, the coroner added, was under the impression that he was ill but had not had his fears confirmed by a doctor. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home in Manitowoc. The Rev. Paul Blaufuss will officiate and burial will be in the Branch Evergreen Cemetery. Springstube was born in Manitowoc Rapids in 1872. He married the former Frances Watruba at Francis Creek in 1895. The couple lived on a farm in Manitowoc Rapids until 15 years ago, when they retired to Branch. Surviving are the wife; six daughters, Mrs. John Ploederl of Manitowoc, Mrs. Laddie Burmeister of Racine, Mrs. Alfred Miller, Mrs. Erna Funk and Mrs. Albert Langley all of Two Rivers, and Mrs. William Schmidt of Rt. 5 two sons, Clarence of Manitowoc and August Jr. of Milwaukee; a brother, Herman of Branch; a sister, Mrs. August Schramm of Manitowoc; 49 grand children and 23 great grandchildren.
