DOROTHY BERNIECE (SCHECHLA) PIERCE
April 13, 1919 ~ March 13, 2013

Dorothy Berniece Pierce (nee Schechla), 93, born April 13, 1919 in Wilsonville, Oregon, last resided in Vancouver, Washington. With a final, soft sigh, at 9 p.m., March 13, 2013, her family and faithful little dog at her side, she gently closed her eyes and left this life to rejoin her family and friends who preceded her in death.

Following a long and difficult three years of progressive debilitation due to severe osteoarthritis and congestive heart failure that coupled with a final pneumonia were the immediate cause of her demise. Despite this debilitating condition, she endured it with faith, good grace and humor.

Dorothy left behind a world very different from the one she joined in 1919 on her family's pioneer farm in Wilsonville, Oregon.

She retained her childhood values of faith,
hope and, above all, charity.

Her parents, Mary (Kosmalski) and Joseph Schechla, also instilled the ability to "kill snakes" by virtue of a hard and determined work ethic.

She very much enjoyed the company of her seven siblings who all preceded her in death: Theresa, Henry, Frances, Harry, Agnes, then herself (with a six year gap before and after), Lois, and baby brother Raymond and his twin George, who died of whooping cough at 18 months old.

Dorothy leaves behind her eldest daughter, Lynne Perry (dear son-in-law Francis), and youngest daughter, Mary Anne Gutierrez. Lynne's children, granddaughter Tabitha (Alex) and grandson Patrick (Bridget) were with her as well as Lynne and Francis at her passing. Patrick has one son, Colton. Mary Anne lives in Sacramento, California as do her two sons, Ryan and Adam and three great-grandchildren. She was also attended by her dear little friend, Skeeter, who does not know he is only a Chihuahua. Her great grand-dogs, Tabitha's "kids," also often visited. Her caregiver, Martha Hunter, brought not just great care, but also much happiness with her kind and cheerful, musical nature. She made Mom smile.

Mom's greatest accomplishment was her family.
She dearly loved all of us and each of our spouses.

She did work outside the home and was the first lady in her family to do so. She was an excellent secretary. She could type over 100 words a minute; wrote in an award winning Palmer Method script and could take shorthand dictation.

She had an independent and adventurous spirit. She attended Wilsonville's only grade/middle school, with Miss Wood as her favorite teacher in Wilsonville, Oregon. She kept for her whole life, her childhood autograph book filled with humorous quips from her friends and family. She graduated from West Linn High, class of 1936, in West Linn, Oregon.

Her first job and eventually her last was for Crown Zellerbach in Camas, Washington. With money earned from her first job, she bought and drove her own Model A Ford. She retired in 1982.

Dorothy was married for the first time, in 1939, age 19, to Lynne and Mary's handsome soldier father, Floyd Dawson. This marriage ended in 1955.

In 1956, she married her true love, Sidney E. Pierce, who passed in 1980. She will be buried next to his side in Washougal, Washington, to continue their dance through eternity.

She had a final marriage in 1983 to Charles Sampair who was widowed the same year as she and was related to Lynne and Mary's father. This marriage saw her get to travel all through the western states including Alaska, but ended amicably 11 years ago. She was also kind enough to allow her first husband to move into Lynne and Francis's spare apartment for the final year of his life in 1982.

Dorothy was content to remain single for the final years of her life enjoying the company of her remaining family, her pets and her Catholic faith.

Her burial was at the Washougal Cemetery in Washougal, Washington on Friday, March 8 followed by a burial Mass at her final parish, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Vancouver, Washington. There was a light repast served after Mass. As it was Lent, donations to her favorite charities or the Catholic Church are welcomed. Brown's Funeral Home in Camas, Washington has a list of charities.
