Mr. Jack Mixon, 85, died suddenly Friday morning (March 1, 2013) at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Waycross.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Ware County. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Whitaker Mixon; his parents, Harley Mixon and Eva Bourne Mixon; a brother, Bruce Mixon and two sisters, Juanita Thrift and Hazel Barnhill.

He was a lifelong farmer. He started farming at the age of 16 with 1.9 acres of tobacco and he was farming 522 acres when he stopped farming tobacco. He was first person in Ware County to have an irrigation pivet system and a green house for growing tobacco plants (known hydroponic farming). He went from peg planting to a hand transplanter, to a one row, two row, four row and finally an eight row planter. He also helped established the bailing system for tobacco.

He was a member of Pebble Hill Baptist Church, the Georgia State Tobacco Board, the Ware County Tax Assessors Board, the Georgia Agricultural Advisory Committee, the Ware County Farm Bureau and the Ware County Young Farmers.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Gilliard Mixon of Waresboro; three daughters, Shirley Simpson (husband Preston), Jackie Vickers (husband Larry) and Cathy Cox (husband Kenneth) all of Waresboro; two sons, Donald Mixon (wife Wanda) of Waresboro, Jimmy Mixon (wife Terri) of Waycross; two step daughters, Denise Smith (husband Wayne) and Pam Rutherford (friend Charlie Sewell) both of Waycross; a step son, Tim Musgrove (wife Michelle) of Fitzgerald; two sisters, Kathleen Bragg of Patlaka, FL, Lynette Crawford of Atlanta; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday (March 4, 2013) at Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Sunday from 5 until 8.
